I don't usually fly like that, I swear. I go a lot slower most of the time. You have superheroes back where you come from too, right? And you're one? Iron Man. I wanted to ask you some stuff about where you came from. Since where we came from's kinda different, I think?
[ on christmas eve, peggy carter delivers the only present this season that she conjures, boxes, and gifts without any prior prompting or without receiving anything from tony first. rather than leave it outside his door, she somehow (somehow) finds her way inside and leaves the box (tied and bow'd) in plain sight.
the gifts within are reverently placed, but simple. they are, by definition, the auntiest of gifts: wool socks, a tin of chocolates, and a single christmas orange. ]
that's the first thing he hears from FRIDAY when he enters his room and honestly, it's the only reason why he doesn't panic. she'd have alerted him to an intruder once the person stepped in.
that she didn't showed that she was familiar with the person who walked indoors. and there are only a few people in wonderland who know FRIDAY.
he looks at the box and opens it, looks at the socks, picks up the orange and nibbles on a chocolate. tony stark sits down, looks at his presents and smiles.
he doesn't text, he doesn't say thank you. but later during the day, he'll leave his own presents. one of them will be horribly, terribly obvious, a framed poster hanging above her bed.
there's a box, too, resting on the bed. inside there's a simple toaster, of all things and a note.
I made it especially. try it. it's fun.
placing bread inside the thing and turning it on will make it play a tune. god save the queen, of all things. ]

[ the circumstances aren't much different from how tony had delivered her gift on her birthday: somehow, she gets inside (can ai be bribed?) and leaves a small gift box out where it's visible. easily discovered.
inside, nestled with some tissue paper, sits a funny looking bracelet. it's half-intended like a gag gift and half-intended like something helpful. alongside it there's a little paper card that simply states to help you keep track of things in what might be rather familiar handwriting.
there is no happy birthday, no big surprise, no fanfare. just the bit of jewellery and a note. ]
[ so at the very least, the war doesn't break on his 48th birthday. Sure, tony has his fair share of worries and he's losing sleep again but he can find a silver lining easily enough.
He spots his present as soon as he comes back from a patrol. He smiles at the card, slips the bracelet on and fiddles with it for a moment or three.
Of course she remembers. Even at his years spent away at boarding school, she never forgot. Tony looks at his wrist and heads for the window.
He still hasn't learned to knock. He uses her window, as always. ]
-- you're teaming up with Friday. I should have known.
There is a lot to be said about how your computer program is more the more reasonable one.
[ something's different -- or, rather, it's a lot of little things. first of, peggy doesn't rise to her feet to greet him. she stays where she sits (feet up!) on her modest sofa. she has a pot of tea within reach, alongside a couple notebooks and a novel or three. it looks as though she hasn't budged from the spot for a few hours. her hair isn't in curls but is instead pinned and tied back so as not to be a nuisance. and although she's wearing makeup, it's minimal.
beyond that, a glance around the shelf-divider suggests that her bed hasn't been made. whatever happened to her in the prison, she's still recovering.
for now, she sets aside pen and paper. she reaches for her mug instead. but not before eyeing his wrist and noticing what he's wearing. peggy smiles. ]
[Just after noon on the fifth of July, Natasha appears on Tony's door baring a paper bag. The smell of fries and a tell tale grease stain make it easy to guess what's inside.
[ Hi there, it's Fitz's annoying somewhat-but-not-really AI calling to be even more of a pain than usual! For good reason, though! Like, hello! Possible death here!
She's been trying to get through for what seems like forever (but it probably wasn't, really), so by the time she gets an answer, she's going to be an absolute mess. And he'd better answer! He's her only hope! Well, he's also the only person the Doctor seems to vaguely trust, so...
[ FRIDAY screens the first few attempts, on his order. He doesn't want much to do with SHIELD, or Dr. Fitz' new nervous breakdown or his harajuku dating sim of an AI. On the ninth attempt, he rolls his eyes and tells Friday to connect the call and record it, as per usual.
[ Tony's been working more and more since Claire's death and reappearance-- something that still chills Pepper to be the bone, as well. She tries not to worry too much just yet; she knows how it looks like when Tony gets really bad, really obsessive, and this isn't it. She's not overjoyed he spends so much time in the lab and doesn't get enough sleep, but she knows forcing his hand will only make him dig in his heels all the worse. Besides, what good would it do to keep him in bed, tossing and turning? None. So, Pepper tries to put the breaks on her own fussing at least every once in a while, and trust Tony's own judgment.
That doesn't mean she doesn't pop in when her own bedtime starts drawing near, just to check in on him and kiss him goodnight. Little things, but important ones. In her nightclothes (very unexciting t-shirt and shorts ensemble) Pepper pads down the hall and enters the room Tony's claimed as his lab space, FRIDAY permitting her inside with no muss, no fuss. ]
Hey, you. [ Her voice is a soft murmur, rubbing a gentle hand on his shoulder as she comes to stand by him where he's hunched over his desk, tinkering with something. Her hair is loose and her face hasn't a speck of make-up on it, a light scent of soap clinging to her skin. ]
[ some nights tony is wide awake, mind racing, trying to find solutions to this fresh development. Claire died, someone killed her, claire is back, the killer was never caught. With a killer free and on the loose, he puts his efforts into keeping those around him safe and only later would he go about trying to find the culprit. He's learned a lesson throughout the years, loved ones first.
He's wide awake now, too but he leans into her as she draws closer, resting his head against her middle and breathes her in. Instinctively, he relaxes. ]
